What is SUP?

SUP stands for Stand-Up Paddling or Stand-Up Paddleboarding.

SUP boards come in all shapes and sizes. There are race sizes, yoga specific boards, hard and inflatable boards. Don’t fret, I bet you won’t even be able to tell the difference when the inflatable boards are inflated to the appropriate psi.

Starr SUP uses inflatable GLIDE SUP boards. That means, max weight capacity per board is 250 lbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question answered below, feel free to fill out the contact form and reach out to get your questions answered before making a reservation for class.

  • Q: What should I wear?

A: Wear whatever you feel most comfortable in, that will allow you to move freely and stretch in. Quick-dry athletic clothing or bathing suits are recommended. Wear clothing that can get wet.

  • Q: Should I wear sunscreen?

A: If you normally wear sunscreen at the beach, follow the same protocol. A hat and sunglasses are optional as well, however know that if they fall off and aren’t secured to your body, they may be lost forever. It is highly recommended to leave all valuables at home.

  • Q: What if I’ve never been on a paddleboard before?

A: That’s awesome! Let us introduce you to stand-up paddling! Before heading out on the water we will begin with a short basics of paddling while on land. When you get on the board, start by paddling from your knees. If you feel comfortable enough, from there, maybe you’ll stand up. If you prefer not to stand, you’ll still have a great time.

  • Q: What if I’ve never done yoga before?

A: Watch and listen for the cues as we move through each pose. As with any yoga class, feel free to enjoy savasana for the entire class if it calls to you. Modifications are always offered to make class accessible for everyone.

  • Q:  I cannot swim, can I still take class?

A: No. For liability reasons, and for your own safety, we do not allow anyone who cannot swim.

  • Q:  How do we not float away while we’re doing yoga?

A: You won’t drift away! Before beginning class, we will either drop an anchor or each board will clip into a line to prevent your board from floating away.

  • Q: What if I fall in?

A: The goal of course is to stay on top of the board but there is a high probability that you will at least get a little wet. There is a chance that you may fall in. Before we get on the board you will be instructed on how to get back up on the board if you do fall in and assistance will be provided if you have trouble getting back on.

  • Q: Will class ever be cancelled for weather?

A: It is a possibility. Students will be contacted about cancellations as soon as possible prior to class.

  • Q: Where are you located? Where do I park?

A: We’ll meet between the band shell and children’s park at Lake Park, a stunning 76 acre space on the west side of Lee Street, between Touhy Avenue on the south and Howard Avenue on the north in Des Plaines. We’ll launch the boards onto Lake Opeka.

There is free street parking anywhere along Lee Street or at the north end of the lake at the Lake Park Marina in the parking lot.

  • Q: Is there a bathroom or place to change?

A: There are bathrooms available near the band shell on Lee Street but it would be best to go prior to your arrival for class.

  • Q: Is there a weight limit to the boards?

A: Yes. Maximum weight capacity is 250 lbs.

  • Q: Will pictures be taken?

A: Yes! Pictures will be taken at every class and shared with you after class. Look for pictures on our social media as well! Follow @marlastarrfitness and @starrsup on Instagram to be the first to see images shared!

  • Q: What should I bring with me?

A: As little as possible. A dry bag will be available on Marla’s board for keys. Leave all valuables and phones at home, if possible.
